Chapter 16

After everything that happened at the weekend, to say Hannah went into her working week with a lot on her mind was a definite understatement. Thankfully, she found plenty to keep her busy in the days that followed unexpectedly finding herself face to face with both Nathan and her old mates. Plenty to keep her from reflecting too much over either event. At the clinic she filed patient charts; chatted with customers; broke up a pair of squabbling puppies; and, in quiet moments, made up gift bags stuffed with information leaflets, a Pets & Ponies’ fridge magnet and some dog ‘n cat treats, to hand out to the visitors who’d browse their stand at the Ashmere Summer Fair. (It was exciting to think of how the event was only a few weeks away now, thanks to August being just around the corner!) Outside of work, she swapped messages with Harry, who got in touch to say he’d come up with another cracking route for them to cycle, on their next ride out together (something else to look forward to). And, although she saw Bunny on her lunch breaks during the week, Hannah also met up with her one evening for a proper catch up – and to carry out a pretty important job her mate had asked for her help with: namely, researching wedding photographers for her big day!

‘How to know who to choose?!’ she mused, as they sat out on Bunny’s patio on a mild Thursday evening, and scrolled through websites of various potential candidates on her friend’s laptop. It seemed every photographer they looked at had equally gorgeous sample photos in their portfolios, of just-tied-the-knot couples beaming under clouds of confetti.

‘I know. It’s tough! Although obviously price is a factor. I do really like this woman’s style, though. She’s called Lou Larson Photography.’

Bunny clicked on a link, and a page of dreamy, soft photos, featuring starry-eyed couples embracing against stunning golden sunsets, popped up on the screen.

Hannah’s eyes widened. ‘Oh. How adorable are these?’ She looked at Bunny, at her striking red hair and the way the cherry-print dress she was wearing made her big brown eyes pop, and sighed. ‘I could just see you and Finn in a shot like this. So romantic. You’d look like movie stars!’

Her friend giggled. ‘Then I think you’ve just sold Lou to me!’ She shut her laptop and reached for her glass of sweet rosé. ‘OK. That’s enough research for one night. Let’s chat.’ She took a sip of her drink then twinkled at Hannah. ‘So ... talking of romance, my love, I’ve been dying to know. What about this Cal that you mentioned the other week? Did you ever take him up on his offer of a bike ride together?’

Oh. Hannah instantly felt her cheeks go pink. Which was silly, because she hadn’t even seen Cal for a little while. They did still swap messages regularly, though – in typical enthusiastic-Cal-fashion, he’d been thrilled to hear Harry was getting on well with his e-bike.
